How to Start a Business with Confidence – Even if You Feel Scared

Starting your own business can feel exciting… and terrifying in equal measure. If you’ve got a heart-led idea, a passion for helping others, or a dream to work for yourself, and are buzzing with excitement, you’re more than halfway there. But what if self-doubt is getting in your way?

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to feel 100% confident to begin. You just need to take the next small step.

In this blog, I’ll share why fear is completely normal – and how to start your business with more confidence, even if you feel scared.

Why It’s Normal to Feel Nervous When Starting a Business

Fear often shows up when you’re stepping outside your comfort zone – and starting a business is a big leap in anyone’s books. You might be worrying:

  • “What if I fail?”
  • “Am I good enough?”
  • “Will anyone buy what I offer?”
  • “What if I don’t know what I’m doing?”

But here’s the truth: every successful entrepreneur has felt this way at some point. Maybe it’s the super successful entrepreneur who is doubting how much to personally invest in their new venture. Maybe it’s the first time business starter wondering if she can afford to give up employment to follow her dream. The key is not to get rid of the fear – but to recognise it, reflect on it, and take action anyway. As Susan Jeffers says:

“Feel the fear and do it anyway.” Susan Jeffers

Five Confidence Boosting Tips for New Female Entrepreneurs

1. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Perfectionism is one of the biggest confidence killers. Remind yourself: your first version doesn’t have to be perfect – it just has to exist. You can refine as you go. And I encourage you to. What you think you know now about your offer, your service, your audience will almost definitely shift somewhat over time.

2. Break It Down into Simple Steps

Overwhelm often comes from trying to do everything at once. If you think of starting your business as a marathon, it’s going to feel like a lot. If you think about it as around a mile a day for a month, then it might feel a lot more achievable. Focus on just one thing at a time.

3. Build a Supportive Community

You don’t have to do this alone. And I urge you not to! Connect with other like-minded women who are starting their business journey or a little further along than you are – they can be a great source of inspiration and motivation. Whether your community is online, a local group, or through my free course and membership, community helps build courage.

4. Visualise Your Future Business Self

This simple but powerful exercise is one not to miss. Spend a few moments imagining what your life will look like once your business is up and running. This helps shift you into a more confident, creative mindset – and reconnects you to your “why”.

5. Start Before You’re Ready

Confidence doesn’t come first – action does. Every time you take a small step, you’ll grow your belief in yourself. Start before you feel fully ready… because your feelings of “ready” might never come. And never is too long to wait to follow your dream.
