As one year ends and another begins, it’s easy to jump straight into planning mode — new goals, new habits, new intentions.
But before you move forward, it’s worth pausing.
Taking time to reflect creates the space you need to understand how far you’ve come, what you’ve learned, and what truly matters as you move into a new season.
Journalling at the end of the year isn’t about creating more “to-dos.”
It’s about reconnecting with yourself — your purpose, your growth, and your vision for the future.
Below, I’m sharing some thoughtful prompts to help you close this year gently and begin the next with clarity and calm.
1. Look Back With Kindness
Before you can plan ahead, take an honest but compassionate look back.
Think about the past twelve months — not as a list of wins or losses, but as a story of becoming.
Ask yourself:
- What moments or decisions am I most proud of?
- Where did I show courage, even if the outcome wasn’t perfect?
- What surprised me about this year — in myself, my relationships, or my work?
You may notice themes — patterns of resilience, growth, or even gentle reminders of what you no longer need to carry.
Reflection isn’t about self-criticism. It’s about awareness.
And awareness is what allows you to realign with your purpose.
2. Release What No Longer Serves You
It’s hard to step into a new chapter while holding onto the old one.
Whether it’s lingering self-doubt, outdated goals, or the pressure to keep everyone happy, write it down — name it, thank it, and release it.
You might journal on:
- What am I ready to let go of as I close this year?
- What no longer feels aligned with who I’m becoming?
- What belief or habit am I ready to rewrite in 2026?
Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting — it means freeing your energy for what’s next.
You can even make this a small ritual: write your reflections on a separate page, then tear or safely burn it as a physical act of release.
I’ve experienced various therapists use this approach and found it to be incredibly empowering.
3. Celebrate Quiet Wins
So often, we focus on what we didn’t do rather than what we did.
But progress isn’t only measured in milestones — it’s in the moments you showed up, even when it was hard.
Jot down:
- What small wins brought me joy this year?
- What am I grateful to myself for?
- How did I honour my values or boundaries this year?
Celebrate those quiet wins. They are proof of your consistency, courage, and care.
4. Reconnect With Your Why
Before you set goals for the new year, come back to your why — the reason behind what you do. This might seem like a simple question but it can become your north star, your guide when times get tough, and when you are not sure what to say yes or no to.
Ask:
- What matters most to me now?
- How have my priorities shifted this year?
- What do I want to experience or feel more of in 2026?
When your goals align with your why, motivation feels lighter — it becomes devotion instead of discipline.
5. Envision the Next Season
Now that you’ve reflected and released, it’s time to look ahead — gently, not urgently.
Picture your next chapter.
How does it feel? What kind of energy do you want to bring with you into 2026?
Try journalling these:
- My word or theme for 2026 is…
- The kind of woman I’m becoming is…
- The way I want my work or business to feel is…
- I will make space for rest, joy, and purpose by…
This isn’t about perfect plans — it’s about intention.
The more clearly you can describe your desired feeling, the easier it becomes to make aligned choices throughout the year.
Closing Reflection
When you look back at your journal at the end of next year, what do you hope to see?
Maybe it’s more peace, more confidence, more creativity, or more freedom.
Whatever it is, know that it begins now — in this moment of stillness, reflection, and awareness.
You don’t need to rush into your future.
You simply need to arrive in it with clarity and open hands.
Take a deep breath.
Close this chapter with gratitude.
And step into 2026 ready for the purposeful shift that’s waiting for you.
There’s exciting times ahead.
Wishing you a wonderful festive season,
Emma
